Sam Taylor-Johnson's new self-portrait photographs were taken in Joshua Tree and feature the artist suspended precariously by trapeze wires high above the dry rocky desert. Her work explores the vulnerability of the human condition and the precariousness of life amid its apparent successes.

“I feel I make suspended self-portraits at junctures in my life, where I am looking around and assessing where I am - not just geographically, but emotionally and spiritually. Moments where I feel I’ve got my feet in this world, but at the same time I’m reaching out my arms to try and understand another dimension. Sometimes it’s about feeling free, sometimes it’s about feeling held, sometimes it’s about pain, and the internal struggle for effortlessness and grace."

Works by Taylor-Johnson are currently included in notable exhibitions at the Musée du Louvre in Paris ("Things: A History Of Still Lifes", until 23 Jan 2023) and at the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm ("Life Eternal", until 29 Jan 2023).
