Venus, Cupid and Satyr
This is one of the magnificent allegories by Bronzino who in his career made beautiful works of this type, the most famous of which is kept at the London National Gallery. The scene depicts the divine Venus who has just disarmed her son Eros, while a satyr is approaching. The great Florentine painter painted this table for Alamanno Salviati, uncle of Cosimo I de' Medici. Through the subsequent marriage of Fabrizio Colonna and Zeffirina Salviati (1718), the work arrived at the gallery.
