Portrait of Stefano IV Colonna
National Gallery of Ancient Art in Palazzo Barberini
This painting immortalizes the soldier of fortune who held the rank of lieutenant general for the florentine Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici. The column which he poses in front of is naturally a reference to the famous roman family to which Stefano belonged. It is probable that the painting was exhibited in the church of San Lorenzo in Florence in 1548, during funeral celebrations for the the man of arms.
