Cristo della Minerva

Michelangelo Buonarroti

Basilica of St. Maria sopra Minerva

DESCRIZIONE:

The work was commissioned by a group of roman nobles, but Michelangelo did a rough of it in Florence and sent it on to Rome to be completed by some of his disciples (Pietro Urbano and Federico Frizzi). Michelangelo was disappointed by their work, whereas the patrons admired the result. The golden drapery was added later in step with the counter-reformation, one of the numerous “corrections” to the work of Michelangelo, of which the Giudizio Universale (Final Judgement) stood most corrected, as all the elements of the work which were considered indecent were painted over.
