In Rendezvous, a new project by Vibeke Mascini (The Hague, 1989) conceived specifically for the spaces of the Foundation, the Dutch artist brings her artistic research into dialogue with features and suggestions of the artistic practice of Arnaldo Pomodoro and documents in his archive.
Interested in the possibilities of transforming materials through the alternative, self-generated use of electricity – understood as a natural property or product of industrial processes – Mascini creates complex multimedia installations, often in collaboration with scholars in other disciplines, playing on the equilibrium of specular concepts such as life-death, positive-negative, action-stasis.
This interest piqued her curiosity for the way Arnaldo Pomodoro uses cuttlebone in the creation of jewellery and small sculptures as a carving media in which the negative form of the object remains impressed.
Rendezvous reflects on the concept of footprints, which Mascini intends as a crystallized physical sign of dynamic time.
Expanding her quest into the field of natural sciences, the artist has initiated close collaboration with MUSE – Museo delle Scienze di Trento, which has created a series of 3D scans of portions of dinosaur footprints from the Lavini di Marco paleontological site (Rovereto), where there is an evident crossing of paths among different animal species living hundreds of years apart.
Using these scans, Mascini replicated the footprints for the Foundation’s Project Room space and filled them with water, which ripples with the passing of visitors thanks to the action of a carbon dioxide sensor.
Rendezvous thus relates and manifests a stratification of signs laden with new meaning, transforming past, static time into present, dynamic time via the surprise generated by a new and unexpected encounter.
With this edition of the Project Rooms, the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation initiates a new cycle for the project, seeking to highlight the harmony between the themes and research interests of the new generations and those of Arnaldo Pomodoro, object of the Open Studio exhibitions in the artist’s studio.
The theme chosen by the Foundation staff and guest curators as a comprehensive interpretive key of the Project Rooms and the Open Studio 2022 is that of the origin, to be grasped in its multiple expressive, content, and material values.
A direct connection is thus created between the activities of historical investigation and development of the contemporary artistic panorama, not so much in the name of a dynamic of specific or hindsighted reinterpretation, but rather an identification of an intergenerational affinity that makes it possible to look at both the past and future of art with new eyes.
