The Sicilian Vespers
National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art
One of the masterpieces of Italy in the 1800s, an era in which painting drew upon the more celebrated episodes of the past. In this case, the venetian painter depicts the sicilian revolt against the Anjou in 1282, unleashed because of an act of violence on the part of a french cortesan against a young sicilian woman. The commission came from the collector-prince Vincenzo Ruffo.
