Double Portrait
National Museum of Palazzo Venezia
This fascinating portrait has been attributed to the master of Castelfranco Veneto since 1633, when it was cited as such in the inventories of Ludovisi. The two subjects remains anonymous however, seeming to represent opposing emotional states, with the figure in the foreground holding a “bitter orange”, probably underlining the melancholy of the figure.
