Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo
Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli
This is one of six Venetian vedute by Giovanni Antonio Canal – better known as Canaletto – that were bought by the Agnelli family for the gallery. The square is known as Campo San Zanipolo by the people of Venice. It has been faithfully rendered. On the right is the Monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni by Verrocchio and directly behind it is the Church of Saint John and Saint Paul. Marking the boundary of the square to the front is Mauro Codussi’s façade of the Scuola grande di San Marco, which was converted into a hospital in Napoleonic times and still serves the same purpose today. Inevitably, there is a gondola on the canal that completes the scene to the left.
