A bust of Cosimo I
European Decorative Arts and Sculpture are part of the founding collections of the Legion of Honor. At the core is a series of masterworks by Auguste Rodin formed by the Legion founder, Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, the most famous of which, The Thinker, is the emblem of the museum. Ranging from the medieval world to the early twentieth century, highlights of the collections include a Spanish ceiling dating from about 1500, a bust of Cosimo de’ Medici by Cellini, a hardstone panel from the Granducal workshops of Florence, French 18th-century furniture, the Bowles collection of English porcelain, sculpture by Clodion and Houdon, three French period rooms, and a tea table and tea service by Fabergé.
