Voluti da papa Sisto III, gli splendidi mosaici paleocristiani di Santa Maria Maggiore narrano in quattro registri sovrapposti alcuni episodi dell’infanzia di Cristo, tratti dai Vangeli apocrifi. Sulle pareti della navata centrale sono invece rappresentate le vicende dei patriarchi e dei profeti dell’Antico Testamento: Abramo, Isacco, Giacobbe, Mosè e Giosuè.

Connected to the reign of Pope Sixtus III, the splendid mosaics on the triumphal arch, depict, in four superimposed sections, the first events of the life of Christ from the apocryphal gospels. On the walls of the nave are the old testament scenes Abraham, Jacob, Moses and Joshua.
