Commissioned by Prince Camillo Pamphilj, the work was created by one of the most talented students of Bernini, the young sculptor from Malta, Caffà, who died young. The scene depicts the martyrdom of the saint, a roman general converted to Christianity that Emperor Hadrian condemned to death along with his family. Saved by a miracle from the lions who remained tame, as seen in the work, he was later burned to death in a red-hot bronze ox.
