 Recent studies conducted by Francesco Caglioti, confirm the name of Michelangelo Buonarroti as the author of fine marble.
The statue is in fact to be identified with that performed between 1495 and 1496 for Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de ' Medici , as reported by the first biography of Michelangelo written by Ascanio Share under the direct supervision of the teacher and taken up by Giorgio Vasari in the second edition of the Lives (1568) .
