Tomb of Kha and Merit
This is the tomb of a rich married couple dating back to the 18th dynasty. When it was found by the Egyptologist Ernesto Schiaparelli during a dig north of Deir-el-Medina in 1906, the collection of funerary items inside was perfectly intact, so it was possible to find out a great deal about the diet, fashions, customs and pastimes of ancient Egyptians. In addition to the sarcophagi of Kha and Merit, the 506 items found include Canopic jars, tunics, stools, linen, tools, toiletries, papyri, jewellery, a chessboard and fossilized food (bread, olives and garlic). In the new tomb display, all of the items have been put in the exact position where they were found.
