Old man sleeping
(second floor, room 33)
Rembrandt, the greatest exponent of XVII-century Dutch painting, paints here the portrait of a man sleeping by a burning fire, as probable allegory of the vice of sloth. Through an outstanding rendering of light the body of the man emerges from the dark background through which only very few objects are visible.
The minute and precise description of an extremely poor dwelling lets through all the strength of Flemish painting, constantly consecrated to a detailed illustration of reality.
