Mithraeum

Basilica of Saint Clement

DESCRIZIONE:

Among the constructions from the roman era, tucked inside the courtyard of a roman home of the Second Century, is this ancient place of worship, made to appear like a grotto with its roof decorated by stars and benches built into the side walls for the faithful. At the center is the altar of marble depicting Mitra Slaying the Bull and on the sides the two torch-carriers Cautes and Cautopates, symbols of the Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes respectively.
