Arch of Titus
Atop the Palantine, this is one of three celebrated triumphal arches still intact today, along with that of Constantine and Septimus Severus. It has only one archway and it was dedicated to Emperor Titus by the Senate for victory in the war of Galilea in 70 A.D. Actually, the monument was begun after his death (in 81 A.D.) and completed in 90. In the Middle Ages, it was incorporated into the fortress of the Frangipani family and adorned with blackbirds: in 1823 Stern and Valadier removed the traces of successive structures.
