DESCRIZIONE:
The rich Venetian merchant Marino Contarini commissioned the building of the palace in 1421, involving some of the best workforce from Veneto and Lombardy. The outcome is one of the richest and best buildings of the city, whose facade is decorated by lapis lazuli, golden leaves and azure fragments which earned it the name of Ca' D'Oro (the Golden House). This late-Gothic jewel was handed over in the centuries, until in mid-XIX century Russian prince Troubetzkoy gave it to the famous ballerina Maria Taglioni. In 1894 it was bought by baron Giorgio Franchetti, who gathered here his family collection in order to create a museum. One of the most prestigious works includes Saint Sebastian by Andrea Mantegna, the Venus in the Mirror by Titian and three paintings by Carpaccio. Do not miss the floor mosaic and the wellhead in the courtyard, sculpted by Bartolomeo Bon in 1427.
