DESCRIZIONE:
Built between 1590 and 1650 by Giacomo della Porta, Francesco Grimaldi and Carlo Maderno, it was mostly financed by Cardinal-nephew Sixtus V, Alessandro Peretti. The work was completed with the facade by Carlo Rainaldi (1655-65). The interior, in the form of a latin cross, is rich in masterpieces dating from the 1400s (Tomb of Pius II) to the 1900s (Chapel of San Getano Thiene), but it is the 1600s that boast the highest representation, making it a vehicle for roman baroque. The dome of Maderno is the third highest in Rome, after those of Saint Peter's at the Vatican and Saints Peter and Paul in EUR.
