On a marble balustrade Mary holds out the Christ child to the priest Simeon, surrounded by the father of Giovanni Bellini, Jacopo, dressed as Saint Joseph, with the sister of the artist, Nicolosia, and the celebrated Andrea Mantegna whom she married in 1453. The final figure on the right, turned towards the onlooker, is actually a self-portrait of the artist.
