The marble throne is said to be that of St Peter because, according to tradition, it was used by the Apostle at Antioch and then gifted to the Doge by the Byzantine Emperor Michael III in the ninth century. In truth it is a peculiar object that combines the remains of a bishop’s seat with a funereal stele featuring Islamic art with Arabic engravings of verses from the Koran
