Tomb of the Philosopher Joseph-Marie de Maistre
Centro

The first chapel to the left contains a marble statue of the Immaculate Virgin by Tommaso Carlone (1633). On its side wall is the gravestone of Joseph-Marie de Maistre (1753-1821), a counter-revolutionary philosopher and a champion of papal authority. He wrote Studies on Sovereignty and On the Pope and served Victor Emmanuel I as his ambassador to the court of Tsar Alexander I of Russia.
