The table is the oldest known work of Duccio and was finally returned after having been for a long time attributed to Cimabue. Duccio times by Florentine master the iconography of the Madonna and the style of the throne, while the position of the Baby seems suggested by models of French Gothic sculpture. The image remained hidden for centuries by repainting century, removed with a delicate restoration.
The board is also known as Madonna Gualino, named after the collector who donated it to the Savoy Gallery in 1930.
