The splendid underground archeological site is normally closed to the public, but accessible with a reservation. The area under the basilica was unearthed from 1939 to 1949 and it is possible to walk along the ancient streets of the old roman cemetary and admire the tombs, of which one is supposed to be that of Peter, the presence of which inspired the construction of the Vatican above.
