Created by Giotto and his studio, the work enriched the main altar of the ancient Saint Peter's Basilica at the Vatican and is painted on both sides. On the central panel is Christ on the Throne at whose feet is Cardinal Jacopo Stefaneschi who commissioned the work. On the sides are The Crucifiction of Saint Peter and the The Beheading of Saint Paul; on the other side is Saint Peter on the Throne and on the sides are Saint John and Paul and Saint Andrew and John the Evangelist. On the panels of the predella, some of which are missing, is the Virgin and the Apostles.
