Trine Bumiller. Waterline

a.topos Venice is pleased to present WATERLINE, the new solo exhibition of American artist Trine Bumiller in Venice. 
 
Water is the planet’s most abundant resource and necessary for life on Earth. It is a large part of us, and a large part of our environment. Since we unequivocally depend on it, recent events have made issues of water even more imperative. The global community is either experiencing not enough of it, or too much of it in places where glaciers are melting, floods are occurring and sea levels are rising. In its myriad forms and expression, it can be both something of great beauty and romanticism or a carrier of tragedy and destruction. Disclosing once again Bumiller’s talent to capture, convey and re-signify the natural world in abstract images that recombine patterns, rhythms and underlying forces inherent in our environment, WATERLINE composes a poetical memorial to the importance of water itself. 
 
Last year, Venice experienced its worst flood in decades. The high tide occurred precisely when a.topos Venice was hosting Trine Bumiller’s first solo show in the city. The irony was not lost, that a show about melting glaciers was closing due to flooding. In this new exhibition, the artist presents the audience with large-scale watercolors that emphasize the extreme waterline height reached last fall by conveying the exceptional tide of 187 centimeters through the paintings’ verticality and high horizon line. This year, Colorado and the western US are facing distress for the opposite reason - the wildfires are a result of warming temperatures and drought conditions. WATERLINE addresses both - the artworks encompass the universal and the personal, as well as the life giving and life-threatening qualities of the resource.

To allow for social distancing, a.topos Venice is not hosting an opening reception. Please note that all visitors must wear masks and that the number of visitors in the space will be restircted for the duration of the show.
