Rudolf Stingel

From April 7 to December 31, 2013, Palazzo Grassi presents an exhibition of the artist Rudolf Stingel, who was born in Merano, South Tyrol, in 1956 and now lives and works in New York.
 This exhibition is Stingel’s largest ever monographic presentation in Europe. For the first time, Palazzo Grassi devotes the entirety of its space to the work of a single artist, with new works as well as some from the past years, all exhibited along with an installation conceived specifically by the artist for the spaces of Palazzo Grassi.
 This special project unfolds over all the rooms of the palace, the atrium and both upper floors, a space of over 5.000 square meters, with a carpet with an oriental pattern that covers the walls and floors. The visitor is free to step on it or to touch it, thereby changing its appearance with his hands. The visual and tactile perceptions are combined, in an attempt to amplify the senses.
 Moreover, the exhibition presents a selection of over thirty paintings that, in the extraordinary environment created by the carpet, almost become windows opening onto yet another dimension. The first floor hosts abstract paintings in silver shades while on the second floor photo-realistic portraits of 17^th century sculptures representing saints are exhibited.
 The museum offers guided tours and workshops in Italian, French and English to enable everyone to discover this contemporary artist known worldwide.
 Near Palazzo Grassi, the Teatrino, a new auditorium of 225 seats recently renovated by Tadao Ando, hosts cultural events and activities (conferences, concerts, educational workshops, talks with artists or writers…). The calendar of the activities is available on the website of Palazzo Grassi.
