Since 1895 artists from all over the world have been displaying their ideas, concepts, and works in the national pavilions of the Biennale di Venezia. Participation in this international exhibition is immensely important for Austria as a cultural nation as it offers the ideal framework for presenting our artists to an international public. Further, for 120 years the Biennale Arte has contributed decisively to our cultural dynamism, standing as it does for a spirit of innovation, exchange of ideas and cross-fertilization, and for inspiration.
Austria was invited to the Biennale at the very outset. Since then, many of the leading artists of our nation have participated in the show. VALIE EXPORT, Franz West, Maria Lassnig, Bruno Gironcoli, Mathias Poledna, Elke Krystufek, to name but a few, have exhibited their works in the Pavilion and, with their extraordinary scope and variety, successfully represented Austria.
I am delighted that Yilmaz Dziewior is curating the Biennale Arte 2015. His interdisciplinary approach has led to the realization of an extremely wide range of artistic projects. This year, Heimo Zobernig, one of Austria’s best-known contemporary artists, will present a major solo show in the Austrian Pavilion designed by Josef Hoffmann. Zobernig proves the ideal artist for the location—his formidable handling of architecture never ceases to astonish.
His contribution further consolidates the successful image of our country and extends the reputation of Austrian art and culture out into the world.
