New Icon is pleased to announce Tuesday, April 29 the opening of the solo exhibition of Andrea Morucchio "Play God" at the Oratory of San Ludovico.
It's a site specific installation, consisting of two projections, a sound composition and a rug.
In the dark space of the oratory the viewer will observe the same video contoured split within the altar and on the opposite wall. The video depicts the artist's naked torso seen from behind, from the neck to the pelvis, while rhythmically moving his arms in an action that repeats always the same : a meditation exercise and regenerative energy .
In the background of the video a geometric pattern in black and white, inspired by a lithograph by Frank Stella from Black Series , 1967.
Around the two projections , real pole of attraction, gravitated to the music and the carpet : the latter, on which was printed the same geometric pattern that is in the video , connect to the wall opposite the altar ; while music is produced by wind instruments played with the technique of circular breathing , which allows you to get a stream of sounds without pause , without a break as is the movement of the body in the video .
The artist builds a space immersive and hypnotic and that all the installation elements combine to create , in close symbiosis with one another . Symbiosis made ??of visual references , but also rhythmic , where no different than the source and the rebound : the first is the mat or his image ? The sound or movement ?
Then stop , take a minute of silence in which nothing is heard , and it shows only the geometric pattern on the walls and the carpet under your feet, almost the silence of prayer , before the start of a new liturgy : 6min sound of +1 silence that repeat in a loop. 6 cm in the distance between the lines of the pattern and the line width of 1 cm . 7, the perfect number for mystics .
Sacred space is the place where the communication is made possible between this world and the Other1 .
The black and white background of the video is not just a repetition of the pattern of the carpet, but a new interpretation and the exaltation of opposites and symbology ( sacred or otherwise) in connection therewith .
Opposites like the minimalism of the Star and the body of Morucchio , disappearance and the presence of the artist, who brings here also shows his experience of life, the same pattern is played on a mat which the artist has made manufacturing in Nepal in a laboratory of Tibetan refugees in the late 90's , to use it at home as a place for meditation.
Moreover concepts such as circularity , repetition, binary logic of opposites, esotericism , body, religion , are constant in all the work of Morucchio .
Here, also , we are in a sacred space and you can not think how , especially the Christian religion , has always used the power of the enchanter images combined with music to connote its liturgies in order to reinforce the message
