The Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition "SOMOS LIBRES II", a selection of works from the collection of Mario Testino, curated by Neville Wakefield.
"SOMOS LIBRES II" will be held at the Pinacoteca Agnelli in Turin from 17 May to 14 September 2014, and will include works from the personal collection of Testino that includes artists such as Tauba Auerbach, Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Glenn Ligon, Jonathan Monk, Ugo Rondinone, Cindy Sherman, Adriana Varejao and Andy Warhol.
Over the past twenty years we have been able to understand the universe by Mario Testino through his photographs . While the images that collects with the camera are not difficult to trace, the art that inspires him and that he collects remained basically private .
SOMOS LIBRES - which in Spanish means "We are free" - was presented for the first time in 2013 to MATE , the cultural association dedicated to Mario Testino, which is located in Lima , Peru. On that first occasion, SOMOS LIBRES analyzed his interest in the works of renowned artists such as Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince and Paul McCarthy alongside works by lesser-known artists and emerging born , like him, in Peru.
SOMOS LIBRES II , hosted by the Pinacoteca Agnelli in Turin , continues to explore the idea of ??creative freedom that is an essential element of the synergy between art and advertising photography and fashion. In line with the underlying theme of a world seen and interpreted by the camera lens as the eye , the exhibition begins with some pictures of visits to artists' studios taken by Testino. The idea of freedom, in this sense, it is immediately apparent as soon as you cross the threshold , before the study of artists and then in the art that produces and reveals.
The core of the exhibition contrasts the empty stage of abstraction with figurative impulse of photography that represents the interests and influences of Testino. Similarly, the installation itself opposed to works that are traditionally hung on the walls, the merging of impulse and momentum that refer to the pages of books and magazines which are the main habitat of the photograph. Within this section, the images shot by Testino are presented as three-dimensional pages of a magazine , which mixes the eye and acquisitive impulses of the collection. The photographs in the collection of Testino, vintage and classic , are hung against the backdrop of his photography . Here, the photograph and the continuous flow of similarity are surrounded and contained in the works carried out by traditional means, at the same time more static as the median for the meaning and more opaque as to deliver it.
In the last room the figurative impulse is echoed in more traditional forms. Hung from eye to the ceiling, so as to cover the entire wall, these works suggest a different form of contiguity . Where the photograph allows the superposition of sources and different media to create multiple exposures of the past and present, and page magazine , film and printing, painted shapes are shown side by side. In these works the more traditional, you can still feel the influence of photography past and the present. Hanging together in this way, speak with one another as well as with the photographic world which, at times, refer. What they reveal is just another aspect of the collection that was modeled in the interstices of the world Testino - a place where studio, art gallery, and magazine collection come together.
