“He painted the impossible so that it became possible. He painted the extraordinary so that it was ordinary.”
Do you know what a butterfleaf is? Would you like to wear an applehat or smoke a pipetree? In Magritte's world everything is possible. An exhibition and workshop dedicated to a great name in art is returning to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni for the third year in a row: after Matisse and Degas, it is now the turn of René Magritte, recounted with masterly skill and a freshness of touch by illustrator Klaas Verplanke, author of the illustrated book entitled Magritte's Apple, a publication produced by the MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which has now been brought to Italy by the publishers Fatatrac – Edizioni del Borgo, thus consolidating its cooperation with the Palazzo delle Esposizioni's Education Services and with the Art Bookshelf, a library specialising in international art books for children, comprising over 2000 art books and books on and by artists.
Inspired by the artist's masterpieces, the book urges readers of all ages to observe the world around them with a free spirit in order to understand that even the commonest of items can take on an unsuspected identity and reveal something new. In the same spirit, the exhibition not only showcases the original sketches and plates but also hosts an ironic and amusing layout to get all age groups actively involved in a game of unusual pairing where reality and depiction, above and below, inside and outside live side by side, recreating those visual short-circuits for which the Belgian artist is so famous.
The exhibition is enriched with a full schedule of tours of the show and of workshop for schools and families to familiarise with Magritte and the surreal imagination that populates his pictures, and to work together on creating combinations of images and words designed to turn reality on its head. A special competition has also been devised to get schools involved in the exhibition layout.
