Welcome to the third edition of Bitume Photofest, the festival of contemporary photography, from September 3rd to 10th, 2016, in Lecce. This edition is part of the Urban Layers project, co–funded by the programme “Creative Europe—Culture” by the European Union. The project aims to create an European partnership in photography, featuring a Residency Program for artists and three photo–festivals.
Bitume Photofest is composed by an outdoor exhibition with large format prints on plastic surfaces, displayed in the urban environment in public squares or historical buildings, to create an interesting itinerary both for photo-addicted and passers–by. In addition to the large format prints, Bitume features three exhibitions from Urban Layers: a group show of international photographic projects selected upon open call; an exhibition of the visual outputs from the Residency Program, which involved six artists to work for three weeks in Gibellina (Trapani, Sicily); an installation chosen by Adrian Paci in the three festivals’ venues (Málaga, Thessaloniki, Lecce).
This year’s theme is identity flows, both intended as flows of identities and liquid identity, immersed in a moving fluid mass, such as the Mediterranean Sea, the “singing sea”, as Homer wrote. Mediterranean, borders, distance, intimacy, migration: these are just some of the threads which intertwine all the projects on show. Dealing with such a theme also gave us the opportunity to think about our own identity: for this reason, beside this year’s exhibitions, you will find archive material from the past editions. We hope through this you can gain an overview on the festival and enjoy once again the sights of international contemporary photographers.
