VEDA is pleased to present HALF-EARTH, a solo exhibition by Emily Jones, on view at the gallery from March 25th - May 15th, 2017. HALF-EARTH is a name transferred from scientist E.O. Wilson’s proposition to devote half of Earth’s surface to nature without humans.
Inside, a 1:3 scale ball-jointed doll sits facing the exhibition space. She dangles her legs from the concrete ledge, witnessing the situation, shifting positions over time. Nests made of chewed bread hold onto the plaster walls. A tile mosaic occupies most of the back wall of the gallery; it depicts four fish at its corners and reads, “They were eating out of our hands.” A hole through part of the mosaic exposes another gallery littered with the debris and tiles.
Embracing complexity, Jones’ exhibitions produce visceral impacts, formalize speculative ecologies, and organize scenarios for critical meditation on language and meaning-making. On the evening of the opening, a performance titled Velella, Velella will take place in the outdoor courtyard of the gallery.
Emily Jones (b. 1987) lives and works in London. HALF- EARTH is the third and final exhibition in a trilogy that includes News from Nowhere, Cordova Vienna AT, 2016, and Echolocation Almanac Inn Turin IT, 2016. Jones has exhibited widely in venues including Serpentine Gallery, London; Galerie Andreas Huber, Vienna; Jupiter Woods, London; Arcadia Missa, London; Future Gallery, Berlin; and Andrea Rosen, New York.
Opening 25 March h 6.30pm
